2010 – Celebrating 25 years of Volkssporting in the Inland Northwest
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Some interesting information from AVA through our Northwest Regional Director, Sam Korff, Sam Gram #12, indicated that there were approximately 23,000 participants in Northwest Year Round Events in 2009. Approximately 400 events averaging about 57 per YRE. Northwest Region covers Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
At this time, LCVA has six Year Rounds: Spokane Downtown; South Hill Parks; Colville; Deer Park; Pullman and Farragut State Park. Our Seasonal events: Davenport and Newport. Our Downtown and South Hill Parks walks average the 57 participation number. Our once a month Saturday club walks, and Tuesday week day walking helps to keep the walking participation around 40 to 50 in our other event areas. LCVA also car pools to other areas to do walking in other club YREs such as Tri Cities, Walla Walla, Ritzville, etc. Those walkers involved with any AVA or state challenge programs are also helping to
keep the YREs interesting for walkers.
If you travel in the Northwest Region, be sure to take your AVA “Starting Point 2010” book or information from various web sites to walk a YRE. LCVA Web Site: www.lilaccityvolks.org; AVA Web Site: www.ava.org. Taking a walk in other cities, communities and woodlands provide history and marvelous scenery in our beautiful
Northwest area.

Volkssport NOT at Bloomsday
Submitted by George Wilthers
Lilac City Volkssport Association sanctioned Bloomsday as a three day event. Bloomsday Race is the first Sunday in May. Registration for Volkssporting credit, and showcase Volkssporting to the trade show participants on the preceding Friday and Saturday. 2010 the American Volkssport Association informed LCVA that we must have a walk every day of the sanction time. The last three years we have been improperly sanctioned for Bloomsday. AVA liability insurance will not cover the trade show without buying additional coverage for about $400.00 per day. Volkssporting at Bloomsday has been canceled.
LCVA Thanks: The Bloomsday Association and Don Kardong, for supporting Volkssporting and the LCVA in participation at the Trade Show and the Bloomsday Race, the members of LCVA who made the previous three years possible, the Bloomies who bought 75 new walker packets at previous Bloomsday Races, all the Bloomsday participants who supported Volkssporting at Bloomsday.
CLUB WALK (SATURDAY)
SPOKANE RIVER/DOWNTOWN WALK
January 9, 2010

The first walk of the 2010 calendar was Saturday, January 9. Twelve participants met at the northwest corner of the Gonzaga parking lot at 10:00 am. We had a little snow during the early morning hours and a persistent mist that turned to ice as we walked, however, we all kept our feet under us. We enjoyed lunch at the Olive Garden and completed the walk after our lunch.

WEEK DAY WALK (TUESDAY)
DEER PARK
JANUARY 12, 2010

Seven (7) walkers participated in the week day walk in Deer Park. The morning temperatures were very mild, however, it was very wet. Deer Park has had more snowfall compared to Spokane and although the snow had melted on sidewalks and streets there was ice left behind and lots of standing water.

We enjoyed our lunch at the Salty Dog. This restaurant is located on the highway into Deer Park. The art decor is very interesting, the food excellent and great service. We were all in good spirits as we headed back to Spokane and the rain was much more serious.
CLUB WALK (SATURDAY)
FEBRUARY 6, 2010
RICHLAND, WA

A total of 13 walkers met at Fred Meyers at 8:00 a.m. to carpool to Richland. We arrived at the Sleep Inn at Pasco at 10:15. There were 4 additional walkers at the motel waiting for us. There are 4 walks that walkers can choose to register for, and we decided on Columbia Point Park Richland. Walkers signed the registration log, returned to their vehicles and proceeded to the walk start point. We had blue sky, some clouds and about 40 degrees to begin the 10K walk. As the morning progressed, there was increased activity on the trail - walkers, walkers with dogs, walkers with strollers and bikers.

Those who enjoyed the event were

We enjoyed our lunch at Anthony’s, a wonderful view of the Columbia River. Our water glasses were kept full by a very pleasant young bus boy.
We returned to Spokane about 4:30 p.m., a very pleasant day for our participants
WEEK DAY WALK (TUESDAY)
FEBRUARY 9, 2010
PULLMAN, WA

Participants met at Fred Meyers, Third and Thor, at 8:00 a.m. There were 10 walkers and we car pooled using two vehicles. The “start point” is at Denny’s restaurant in Pullman, and the parking area was full as all Denny’s had a special, a free “grand slam” breakfast from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., that was advertised during the Super Bowl. We did not see the sun, however, it was a very mild day - great for walking. Lilac City is the sponsor for the walk in Pullman, and the trail masters are Dick and Geri Odell of LCVA. Pat Halverson, a resident of Pullman, makes sure our cabinet stays in good condition for our walkers - thanks Pat!

Joining us today for the trip to Pullman and the walk through WSU were:

Junis Cregar
Jenny Harding
Allan Heritage
Carol Juillerat
Claudia Miner

After Lunch at the Fireside Inn we head home.
