The Lilac City Volkssport Association Newsletter is being published six times in 2010 by the Lilac City Volkssport Association, a non-profit, volunteer, educational association providing fitness, fun and friendship via walking and other sporting events. Active participation will improve your physical, mental and emotional health resulting in an improved quality of life. Come Walk with us. Jim Buchholz, President.
PRESIDENTS CORNER
Although Jinny and I have been volkssporting a relatively short time (about 5 years), we have seen quite a few places. We have walked all the Washington state counties, all but one Arizona YRE and seasonal, finished 11 western state capitols and a few more. A far cry from some of the more seasoned travelers in Lilac City club, but at least we have a start. One thing people in all the places we have walked, have in common, is a love of their home turf. They all believe they have the most beautiful places to walk. I feel that way about Spokane and the surrounding area. Although Lilac City has great walks, there are still undiscovered places to explore and enjoy as a club or individually. I believe Spokane is a gem city waiting to be fully developed as a walking destination. We will have a state park challenge next year and Riverside is a challenging, yet beautiful place. There are wildlife refuges, rails to trails sites and many more. We also have a wealth of experience in our club as far as knowledge of the area. How can we tap that knowledge? We need to be able to do a few “discovery” or exploratory walks with the help from our experienced and knowledgeable club members. Calling all club members to a new year, a new start, a new challenge and some new and different walks! Come walk with us and talk with us about your own special places you want to put on the walking calendar of Lilac City Volkssport Association. Help us continue to celebrate our 25th anniversary and be part of a new beginning for the next 25 years. Happy 25 and counting Lilac City!

CLUB WALK
DEER PARK YRE
SATURDAY, JULY 10, 2010
Our walk began with 13 participants, 10 walkers doing the 10K and 3 walkers doing a 5K. Deer Park has not had a 5K, and LCVA is trying to make certain all of our Year Rounds and Seasonals have 5K routes. The route and map were given to the Trail Master for this walk and he will determine if this is an acceptable 5K route. It was a great morning for all of us. We were looking forward to lunch at the Salty Dog, however, we finished our walk around 10:30 a.m. and the restaurant did not open until 11:30 a.m. so we had great sandwiches at the Classic Café in Deer Park. Those walkers participating in this mornings walk were: Jean Thomas, Junis Cregar, Claudia Miner, Gardner Bailey, Jim and Jinny Buchholz, Jenny Harding, Virginia Wood, Elnora Wildermuth, Audrey Gilmore, Rhema Campo, George and Donna Withers. Rhema is the granddaughter of Jenny Harding and many of us were amazed how she did the 10K walk in flip flops. We enjoyed her company.
WEEK DAY WALK
SOUTH HILL PARKS YRE
TUESDAY, JULY 13, 2010
Our South Hill Parks walk takes walkers in and around four parks: Manito Park, Cannon Hill Park, Polly Judd Park and Turner Moore Heritage Gardens. We did discover that the Heritage Gardens are closed Monday and Tuesday, however, you can view the gardens through the fencing. Polly Judd Park is a small neighborhood park but with some very nice amenities, and provided us with a pleasant place to have a drink of water and use the restroom. Enjoying our day of walking: Jean Thomas, Junis Cregar, Jim and Jinny Buchholz, Allan Heritage, Jenny Harding, George and Donna Withers. Our lunch was at Applebee’s, and our waitress wanted to know what we were about because most of us were wearing our LCVA purple shirts. An added note: George Withers always carries a supply of LCVA bookmarks with AVA’s website and LCVA’s website. He is usually handing these bookmarks to at least one or two people who inquire about us. Thank you Larry Walsh, LCVA member, for making these bookmarks.
CLEAN UP AT MANITO PARK
SATURDAY, JULY 24, 2010

Ten (10) Lilac City members met at Manito Conservatory at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning with gloves, pickup sticks and walking shoes ready to spread out in different directions to do some clean up. The park was really alive with walkers, runners, bikers and walkers with various breeds of dogs. The morning was already quite warm with a beautiful blue sky. The gardens were absolutely lovely in various colors. We spend an hour picking up various items of trash, and then go about our own Saturday morning errands. Taking part in today’s clean up: Bonnie and Lew Applegate, Larry Charneski, Jenny Harding, Allan Heritage, Sue and Brad Lecoe, Claudia Miner, George and Donna Withers.
25TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT
HAYDEN LAKE STROLL CANFIELD MOUNTAIN HIKE
SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2010

On July 31, 2010 we began celebrating 25 years of volkssporting with the Hayden Lake Stroll and Canfield Mountain hike. First, we celebrate all the volunteers who got up very early to begin trail marking and set up at Paul’s Country Store at 6:00 am. Enduring some wind and rain is all part of volkssporting at times. Second, we celebrate all those who took a walk for our event. There was literally something for everyone who loves to walk, a 5K, 11K and 22K mountain hike.

The scenery was great, the views plentiful and the sun did shine from late morning into the afternoon. Third, we celebrate Art and Ida, the owners of Paul’s Country Store, who went over the top to make sure all our participants and volunteers had a wonderful experience. The cake was tasty, the brats and German potato salad awesome and the entire lunch menu well done! Lilac City Volkssport Association will continue the celebration in September with our Cat Tales event in Mead, Washington. We hope to see old friends and new faces as we continue to celebrate our 25th year of volkssporting in Eastern Washington. Check us out online at lilaccityvolks.org. and help us continue the legacy of volkssporting. Come walk with us for fun, fitness and friendship in Spokane and Eastern Washington.
Panhandle Perfect
Picking the perfect day for a walk is always a challenge but we succeeded on Saturday, August 7, when 15 Lilac City members and a canine associate drove to Sandpoint during their summer weekend festival. A sunny sky and a cool lake breeze was the order of the day as we enjoyed a walk, lunch at the Hydra and shopping at the city beach marketplace. Thanks to Audrey Gilmore, Jenny Harding, Gardner Bailey, Junis Cregar, Jean Thomas, Audrey and Norm Merrill, Ivanka Lopez, Elnora Wildermuth, Bill Stockman, Larry Shaw, Carol Juillerat, Larry Charneski, Jim and Jinny Buchholz, and Sarah for supporting our walk. With all the summertime choices for recreation, we are pleased that these members chose to come walk with us. Check our newsletter and website for times and places of other walks and events. Come help us continue to celebrate our 25th anniversary year.

Sandpoint Part 2: On Wednesday, August 18, George and Donna Withers, Allan Heritage, and Claudia Miner met Bill and Geri Stockman at the Athletic Club. Four of the walkers initiated the new 5 k option, while Allan and George completed the 11 k. We also enjoyed lunch at the Hydra Steakhouse. It was another beautiful day in the Inland Northwest.
Farragut Fun and Floating Food
On Tuesday, August 10 nine hardy hikers invaded Farragut State Park to walk the shaded 10K loop trail. Thanks to Jenny Harding, Audrey Gilmore, Larry Shaw, Liz Bourdon, Larry Charneski, Gardner Bailey, Elnora Wildermuth, Jim and Jinny Buchholz for continuing to help celebrate our 25th anniversary year by supporting our club on one of our most beautiful year around walks. The sun was shining, the shade welcome and the little creek alongside the walk was moving fast. We were all surprised how well the signage showed the way. Thanks to George and Norm for great trail marking. Come walk with us again this late summer and early fall on our Southeast Corridor walks in Colfax, Dayton, Pomeroy and Clarkston. For something different, the group decided to travel the short distance to Bayview and do lunch on the floating patio on Lake Pend Oreille. Good food, great fun and lively conversation; we give it a 10.

Farragut continued...6 LCVA members enjoyed Thursday (August 26th) morning walking the trails of the state park. Three completed the 5 k and 3 plus Sarah finished the 10 k. We opted to lunch at the Country Boys Restaurant in downtown Athol before heading back to the city. Those attending were Norm and Audrey Merrill, Claudia Miner, George and Donna Withers, and Allan Heritage.
THE FRIENDS OF MANITO 20TH CELEBRATION
AUGUST 16, 2010
At the request of Geri Odell, (LCVA member), LCVA was asked to participate in The Friends of Manito 20th Celebration, August 16, 2010, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. We had a picture perfect location on the corner of Manito Conservatory overlooking Duncan Garden. The garden was brilliant in color, and the various gardens had many visitors throughout the day. There were many garden clubs participating in
this celebration.
LCVA enjoys their monthly meetings at the Manito Annex, and as a community project. We have a spring, summer and fall clean up by LCVA members in the park. Our South Hill Park walk takes in many of the wonderful garden locations in the park. Members participating in the LCVA booth: George Withers, Allan Heritage, Claudia Miner, Donna Withers and Geri Odell. Our participation gave us the opportunity to talk about volkssporting, show our wonderful photos of our activities, distribute material regarding LCVA activities and website information.
We thank Geri (charter member of LCVA and The Friends of Manito) for
asking LCVA to be part of this celebration.

SANCTIONS FOR 2011
As of now, we have sanctioned three walks as YRES…Spokane River, Spokane South Hill Parks, and Pullman. We have changed the sanctions on Colville, Deer Park and Farragut State Park to Seasonals…April 1 - September 30th. The Seasonal events in Davenport and Newport have been renewed. Additionally we have sanctioned Sandpoint as a seasonal from April 1 – September 30th. A big plus for the coming year is that all of your YRE/Seasonal events will have at least one 5 k or 6 k option to go along with the initial 10 k or 11 k. See you on the trails.
