PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Happy New Year!. This year we are offering a new yre at Hayden, ID. Also, we have changed three of our yres to seasonal events: Colville, Deer Park, and Farragut State Park. This year we will be making available the southeast corridor walks as sanctioned guided walks…offered on one day with a common start time. The first of these will be Asotin County (Clarkston). It is our responsibility to host the ESVA Meeting in October. Watch the website and/or the newsletter for more information on the state meeting. May this year find us healthy and on the trails of the Inland Northwest and beyond.

See you on the trail.

Allan

CLUB WALK 11/05/11

COLVILLE YRE

By Donna Withers

Eight a.m. Saturday morning (11/05/11) at Fred Meyers there were 15 walkers and 2 dogs ready to leave for Colville, WA.

The weather was very brisk finding most us of with heavier coats, gloves and some type head covering. The drive north to Colville was very interesting with the cloud banks creating some very interesting pictures. Driving through Chewelah the outside temperature was 16 degrees and on the outskirts of Colville the car temperature was registering 23 degrees! We decided to do the original 10K walk in Colville to eliminate some hill climbing. Those in attendance this morning: Gardner Bailey, Jinny Buchholz, Jim and Marlene Ervin, Audrey Gilmore, Jenny Harding, Keats and Laury McLaughlin (Celtic), Norm and Audrey Merrill (Sarah), David Stingle, Alta Stingle, Elnora Wildermuth, George and Donna Withers. As we climbed the last hill, the sky was blue, sun shining, and on the distant north hillside, we could now see the cross and slightly below the big "C".

As the walk took us through downtown, George stopped in at the Acorn Saloon to let them know that we would be returning in about an hour with 15 people for lunch. The restaurant was ready for 15 hungry people - a great ending for another LCVA Year Round Event.

Remember, anyone is welcome to "Come Join Us" for our group walks.

WEEKDAY WALK 11/14/11

FARRAGUT STATE PARK YRE

By Allan Heritage

It was clear and beautiful although a little on the chilly side as six of us gathered at Farragut State Park Headquarters and drove to the viewpoint at the end of South Road so we could explore an alternate route for this event. The route travelled took us along Scenic Bay, where a bald Eagle took flight and a doe and her fawns were seen, and the town of Bayview. The trails walked on were snow covered in some places but we were all dressed appropriately. The views of the surrounding mountains with fresh snow and colorful tamaracks were tremendous. Nearing our return to our cars the weather took a dramatic turn for the worst and we were snowed on, blown about and watched the top of several trees be broken off and fall to the forest floor. After the walk we returned to the visitor center to report to the ranger that we were all safe and had had a good walk. As usual we stopped to eat afterward in Athol. This time Jenny directed us to the steakhouse  where they had eaten last time a group had walked in Farragut. Enjoying this adventure, our last group walk of 2011, were Tim Dewitt, Audrey Gilmore, Allan Heritage, Jenny Harding, and George and Donna. Withers.

CHIRSTMAS LIGHTS WALK 12/10/11

By Sue Keehnen and Allan Heritage

Both the workers’ walk and the event were blessed with good weather. For the first time in several years we were actually able to walk on the sidewalks instead of the snow. There were 36 walkers, which included the crew from the workers' walk. The soup was mostly gone when we left, the goodies were eaten up and appreciated. Dennis and Debbie Standridge made an appearance and were duly noticed by those who were still around.

ODESSA RECON SCOUTING TRIP 12/17/11

By George Withers

LCVA force recon team did a fog filled scouting trip to Odessa WA. on Saturday December 17. Sue Lecoe had made arrangements to meet Marlon K. Schafer in Odessa to give us some advice on setting up a volkswalk in Odessa. Marion encouraged us to set up a walk either September fest or the Spring Fling Quilting or the Motor cross events that Odessa sponsor every year. He gave us ideas about the town portion of the walk and trail portion of the walk. We did 10k on a very well marked BLM trail. Grass and sage brush covered up the loop we were trying to do so the walk turned into an out and back. We had conversation about alternatives and came up with some ideas. Lunch in town was a success, Brad Lecoe got the mustard he wanted and Audrey Merrill had time to visit a Quilting shop. After lunch we traveled North on Hi way 21 to the Odessa Craters Loop site. This is a 1.5 mile loop into BLM land that is very interesting but would be very hard to set up a 10k walk due to parking and restroom limitations. What an interesting landscape, no shade, open vista and changing geography. Return to Spokane was another fog filled adventure on WA hi ways. Scout Team was Brad and Sue Lecoe, Audrey Gilmore, Norm and Audrey Merrill, George and Donna Withers.
